Tween Dresser Makeover

March 29, 2016 by Holly Gagnon 6 Comments

The dresser in my son’s room needed a Tween Dresser Makeover.  Heck, it needed makeover when we got it for free like 8 years ago!   Ace Hardware’s 31 Days of Color provided me the perfect opportunity to update my son furniture from  Kid-ish to a little bit more Tween-ish.

As you can tell, my son is also a gamer like most Tween boys are.  I also made this  DIY  I’d Rather Be Gaming Sign to hang over his updated dresser.

The colors of his room were actually inspired by his eye glasses.  This is his second pair of glasses with these frames.   He’s not big in to change either.

Valspar Paint in Kiwi Slice Green

Since he loves the colors green and blue, I was extremely happy about the Valspar  paint color I choose to work with which also happens  to be  in his favorite shade of green.  Kiwi Slice Green that is!

Dresser Makeover with Chalk Paint

As you can see, the dresser was dated, covered in kid stickers and was definitely  in need of a makeover.  My son inherited this dresser from the people we bought our house from years ago.  They just sorta left it so we took advantage of it.

I decided to  turn my  Valspar Paint in to DIY Chalk Paint.  I really like painting with chalk paint since there is no need to use a primer and  chalk paint pretty much sticks to  every surface and a little goes a long way.

Here’s how I make my own DIY Chalk Paint.

  •  2Tb Magnesium Carbonate and 1 Tb water.  Mix well, add more water if needed until slurry consistency.
  • Stir mixture in to 8 oz of paint.  Mix Well.

Then, start painting!

The dresser and drawers took about 2 coats of paint and one coat of a clear Paste Wax  to complete.  When painting with  any type of chalk paint, you must seal the piece with a creme wax or paste wax of choice.

End Table Makeover with Chalk Paint

Since my son and I loved the Kiwi Slice color so much, we decided to give his end table a makeover too. This end table is actually a dumpster dive of mine.  The neighbor’s kicked it to the curb so I snatched it up. Score!

I think his end table  {another free piece} was more dated than his dresser  was but it has a new life  now with  Valspar Kiwi Slice and a blue accent.

Since this this dresser makeover was inspired by my son’s glasses,  we decided to use another paint color found at Ace Hardware, Heirloom China as an accent color.

I absolutely love the way my son’s dresser and end table turned out.  The Kiwi Green and Heirloom China complement one another so well.  My son’s room isn’t totally finished though. He now want’s his bed painted too so I will definitely be making another trip back to Ace hardware for some more Kiwi Slice!
