How to Make Faux Chains

October 21, 2013 by Holly Gagnon 26 Comments

I fell in love with this Halloween Hack a while back when my crafty girlfriend made them.  I loved the so much, I had to share this tutorial myself on How to Make Faux Chains for Halloween .

How to make Faux chains out of pipe insulation. Perfect for Halloween!

These Faux Chains cost less than $3 to make depending on how long you want .  The chains can be a little time consuming but it’s a great craft for the kids to help with too.
How to make Faux Chains for Halloween. Great Halloween Hack
To make the faux chains you will need a 1 inch  pipe insulation sliced in about 1/2 to 1 inch rings.     I’ve had to make more of these chains over the years since the wind tends picks up where we live and a few have blown down the street.
I’ve made chains out of black self- sealing insulation as well as the plain grey insulation.  With using either one though,  I recommend hot gluing the ends together to keep the  links together.    Both kinds of insulation work fine,  just depends on what  color you are looking for in your Halloween decor.

You can also get all fancy with your Faux Chains by dry- brushing grey paint on the chains to  give them more realistic details.

Wood Halloween Family wrapped in faux chains
When your chains are the length you want,  just wrap your Faux Chains around a Halloween Wood Block Family like I did, up a Halloween staircase or even string across a mantel.  Endless possibilities!

I love your chain! I saw the original pinterest post and her was black. Did you use gray spray paint?

Hi, thanks for vising Linda I actually used an insulation pipe tubing to make these faux chain, since it’s already grey, no spray paint needed! Holly 🙂

I love this! It was so easy to make & took nearly no time. I recommend using 3/4in or 1in (I used 1in) foam pipe insulation. I learned the hard way when I used 1/2in…inner diameter isn’t large enough to connect 3 links together. If you buy the kind w/o adhesive, the slit lengthwise on the stick is not cut through only scored. Thus not having to “open” every link, just every other link. I hot glued the openings in the links together, this goes quickly when you get your rhythm going. So far it’s all holding up great!

Thanks so much for the comment and reminding me to update my post about using the one inch pipe. That’s the size I’ve always used. So glad it worked out for you, thanks for sharing! Holly 🙂

Hi, I love this idea and want to use it for work decor but I dont know how much to get. For every foot of tubing how much chain did you get out if it?

How fun! The tubing is pretty long but I’m guess when you cut it up maybe it makes about 4 feet of chain? Not 100% tho. Good luck! Holly
