How to Make Yarn Balls

September 9, 2013 by Holly Gagnon 3 Comments

I have a huge box of yarn in my craft room.  I don’t even knit.  My yarn stash is solely to make crafts with yarn.. I love the look of yarn balls, the endless possibilities of yarn colors and how they’re just an easy way to pull colors together.  I even bought this birdcage to house my yarn balls…seriously.

As a member of the Glue Dots ® creative team,  I’m always thinking of simple and clever ways to use up them Glue Dots®.  Some months my creative ideas are flooding and some months I’ve got no clue.  So, after using Glue Dots® to make about 1000 {kidding} yarn balls, the idea finally came to me to show you how to make yarn balls using Glue Dots®.

Burlap Button Tag

For this batch of yarn balls, I went for a Baby Shower theme by adding a burlap tag and Baby Shape buttons.
How to make yarn balls out of foam balls, yarn and glue dots

How to Make Yarn Balls

  • Adhere Ultra Thin Glue Dot® on two sides of a styrofoam ball.
  • Attach the end of yarn onto Glue Dot® and wrap yarn around ball adhering to the Glue Dot® on opposite side.
  • Keep wrapping yarn around ball in various directions, overlapping yarn until the styrofoam is covered.
  • Tuck end of yarn underneath a yarn layer.

What’s great about making Yarn Balls is not only is a simple craft, they’re perfect to add a little color in to your home for any season.

I knit so I have lots of yarn-more than I will ever use knitting. Love the idea of using yarn balls to decorate with. The bird cage is such a cute idea for showing them off.
