Valentine’s Drop Cloth Pillows

February 1, 2018 by Holly Gagnon 3 Comments

Hello-canvas, paint and burlap!   What crafty gal doesn’t love that combo?   I know I sure do and  I’ve  used most of my 6′ x 9 foot canvas Drop Cloth  to make 5 throw pillows, a banner and  a few craft fails along the way.  So if you happen to love canvas, paint and burlap, you’ll love to see how easy it is to make these Valentine’s Drop Cloth Pillows.

I’m definitely not an advanced sewer  by any means but I am able to make a basic throw pillow by cutting out two squares of fabric and stitching them together.

Burlap and Paint Valentine's Pillows made from Drop Cloths

These Valentine’s Pillows are made out of drop cloths purchased from my local hardware store.   I made two different types of Valentine’s pillows.   One with paint and one with strips of burlap sewn on the front.

How to make a Painted Drop cloth pillow for Valentine's Day

To make the Painted Drop Cloth Pillow, I cut out a large heart template with my Silhouette CAMEO, traced it  on to the canvas then painted the heart with red DecoArt  paint.   Since drop cloth canvas is is really thick, it took about 3 coats of paint to make the heart uniformed.   I know, kind of ironic purposely  painting a drop cloth.

To make the Drop Cloth and Burlap Valentine’s Pillow, I cut out a strip of red burlap, double the size of my pillow and stitched it on to the front of the pillow making ruffles along the way.

After I sewed on the burlap ruffle, I stitched  the two squares of the canvas together to make into a pillow.  Then hot glued a strip of pink burlap and  canvas over the red burlap ruffle.   I used hot glue to adhere the strip over the the ruffle just ’cause it was plain easier.

What I like about sewing burlap is that it doesn’t need to be perfect.  Messy is good.  Just stitch it on with the frays and all.

Use Fabric Fuse to close pillows

Since I mentioned before,  I’m definitely not an advanced sewer,  I used Fabric Fusion to glue the pillow opening closed instead of hand stitching it together after I stuffed the batting inside .  I told you I was not a sewing expert.   I’m all about a quick and easy technique that works great!

So lovin’ my simple, DIY Drop Cloth Valentine’s pillows.  They look great displayed on my Valentine’s front porch.

PS- if you like that Valentine’s Mailbox displayed on the ladder, you can see how I made it over on the Pebbles Inc blog.
