DIY Galvanized Bucket Christmas Tree Skirt

November 18, 2019 by Holly Gagnon 2 Comments

Last year, when I figured out how easy it was to make a Galvanized Bucket Christmas Tree Skirt, our tree was already up, decorated and just to heavy to lift in the bucket.  Sigh.  Fingers crossed this idea finds you before your tree is up on display.

So finally, after a year of waiting, I finally got my Galvanized Bucket Christmas Tree Skirt under my tree.  Yay for patience!

Now, I’m sure you’ve seen this Galvanized Bucket Christmas Tree skirt idea all  over social media.  I’m totally in love with the rustic look.  You may of also seen these types of buckets for sale in stores and they’re definitely NOT cheap.

DIY Galvanized Bucket turned in to a Christmas Tree Skirt

To make the bucket tree skirt, I  purchased a 15 gallon steel utility tub from a hardware store.

How to make galvanized metal look distressed

Since the bucket was to shiny for my liking, I decided to give it a distressed look using a faux  paint technique.  Now, if you want your tree to sit in the bucket, your done but if your tree is like mine, the tree stand is to wide for the bucket bottom so I had to flip it over to and remove the bottom.

I’m am sure there are many ways to cut  out the bottom out of a steel bucket but I used what I had on hand in the garage.  I really just needed an extra large can opener!

To cut the bottom out,  I punch a hole through the bucket then use tin snips (is that what they’re called?) to cut out bucket bottom.  Caution, the steel is very sharp!  Make sure you’re wearing gloves.  Removing the bottom out of the bucket may take a little bit of elbow grease but it can be done easily if your tin snips are sharp.

After the bottom is cut out of the bucket, use pliers to flatten down the sharp edges.

I took it a step further and hot glued a thick piece of natural twine over the flatten edges just to prevent myself  or someone else from getting cut on the sharp metal.

That’s it! . Now flip the bucket over and stick your tree inside.   I love the way my Galvanized Bucket Tree Skirt turned out.  It was such a simple project and looks fantastic under my tree and was worth waiting a year to display.

Hahahaha! I did the exact same thing for my tree! But I’m two steps MORE rustic! My tub was actually used around here on the homestead. Has some dents and even some good ol’ fashioned rustic rust! After the season last year it never made it into the garage, it sat under the deck and is currently sitting in the front yard where the Pyrenees pup drug it to play lol
My son was just asking me if I wanted him to get and clean it up for the tree❤️
    Happy Holidays🎄

I was lucky to buy my bucket for $4.
Bought it last winter at our Dollar plus store!
