DIY Foam Pallet Fish

April 28, 2017 by Holly Gagnon Leave a Comment

Since I grew up in Florida,  I’m drawn to any type of weathered beach, rustic wood decor.   I now live in the desert far, far away from the ocean,  but I still have a soft spot for the beach and like to incorporate a little bit of my ocean  roots in to my home decor.  This DIY Foam Pallet Fish was inspired from our recent visit to Key West.

This month, the Make It: Fun Crafts®  team was asked us to create anything we wanted out of our foam stash.   Since, the lazy, tropical lifestyle of Key West is still  running through my brain, I  was inspired to bring a little bit of Key West back in to my home decor.

Supplies Used to make DIY Foam Pallet Fish:

Make It: Fun Crafts® Foam Sheets
Make It: Fun Crafts® Smooth Finish
Make It: Fun® Styro Electric Cutter
Paint brushes
Acrylic Paints
Ruler

DIY Foam Pallet Fish. How to cut a fish out of foam

To make the DIY Foam Pallet Fish, I traced a fish shape on to a piece of  Make It: Fun Crafts® Foam Sheet then used a Make It: Fun® Electric Cutter to cut out the fish.  If you like to work with foam, you need this cutter in your life.  You do have to take your time when cutting the foam but it is totally fabulous to use to cut out any shape you desire.

When I was happy with the shape of the fish, I covered the fish with a couple layers  of  Make It: Fun Crafts® Smooth Finish Make It: Fun Crafts® Smooth Finish .

When the Smooth Finish was dried, I lightly sanded all over to make it smooth then used a ruler to draw score lines along the fish to look like strips of pallet wood .

If you’ve ever been to Key West, the island is  full of weathered yellows, blues, greens and pinks.  So it was only natural that I replicate those colors on to my Foam Pallet Fish.

I painted each strip of faux pallet wood strips a different color then dry brushed over the base color with white  paint to make it look more weathered.

For the fish eye, I used a dark marble.  I have to give all the credit to my daughter on that one, she totally gave me the idea.
