The wood crafts aisle in the Craft Store is one of my favorite areas to visit. I should also be embarrassed by my stash of unfinished {potential} wood projects I’ve hoarded away. Occasionally, I do manage to complete one of them wood projects that I’ve saved for a raining day like this wood serving tray turned into a DIY Distressed Wood Serving Tray.

Why is it most of us can agree, the older it looks the better it is? Just like those {new} designer blue jeans we buy that are worn out yet still cost a small fortune. First World Problems.
To distressed this wood serving tray , I painted it white, used an electric sander to randomly distress areas then applied a light coat of stain over the dry paint. Applying stain over paint adds a unique color IMO.
Since a little bit of stain goes a long way, I applied the stain with a sponge brush then used a paper towel to quickly wipe off the excess. As you wipe off the stain, you’ll begin to see the distressed areas become darker in appearance developing into your aged look. Just like magic!
Inside the tray, I adhered a distressed piece of patterned paper on the bottom of the tray with Mod Podge . I achieved this distressed paper look by simply tearing and inking the edges.
On the outside of the tray, I adhered buttons from Buttons Galore to the corners and tied Hemptique Natural Cord around the handles. Adding buttons on your projects can be an inexpensive way make them beautiful.
Totally love this tray and so glad it doesn’t live in my stash of unfinished wood projects!
