We just recently downsize to move across county and our plans fell through. Which means I had to get rid of a lot of stuff that was dated or not essential to take up valuable space on the moving truck {unlike my craft supplies}. Unfortunately, our plans fell through and we ended up only moving three miles over from our previous house ( I know, Gah!) which also happens to be 800 square feet bigger. All that stuff I got rid of … Tears.
Simple and Temporary Fireplace Makeover

Our new house has a farmhouse feel with lots of white, grays, built in cabinets, a wood staircase, wood floors as well as a fireplace. Eek! It is however, a rental house. So, anything I do to make it feel more like my own has to be temporary. Sigh. But it’s really not so bad with all the amazing temporary products available now a days. Luckily, our house already has good bones, it just needs a little bit more farmhouse flair in certain areas. Like the fireplace was in dire need of Simple and Temporary Fireplace Makeover.
As you can see, the fireplace is pretty plain and boring with the tile. There isn’t even a hearth! Ok, yes I did have to Google what is the bottom of the fireplace called. It’s a hearth and mine was without. Again, being a rental house my ideas have to be temporary and not expensive. This whole Simple and Temporary Fireplace Makeover cost me less than $40 and was done with removable wall paper!
Since I felt like the fireplace was top heavy, I needed to make my faux fireplace hearth. To do this, I purchased a 6 inch x 72 inch wood board from the hardware store and painted it with white chalky finish paint.
What was so great about this faux heath was that I didn’t even have to cut the board. It was already the prefect length and now provides a temporary fireplace hearth for me to decorate.
Above the fireplace, I adhere removable faux brick wall paper on the wall. The whole process was really easy to do , the hardest part was making sure the bricks were lined up in each row.
After the wallpaper was adhered on the wall, I trimmed the edges out using 2 inch x 24 inch wood trim that I painted white and nailed to the wall over the edges of the wallpaper.
The trim really does make a a nice finished look on the wall. Now, time for the fun part! To decorate the living room and stage my fireplace makeover with some of my favorite things.
One of the things we got rid of during out move was our sectional sofa. It was a big, dated, tan leather sucker that had been well loved for the past 10 years. It was time to part with it and I wasn’t about to waste the limited space I had on truck with that couch. It was picked up by some guys who own a Hookah Bar. Ha! Funny to think of our family couch sitting in a Hookah bar.
The two things that are top priority on my furniture list is a sofa and a guest bedroom. set preferably in neutrals or grays to keep with my modern farmhouse theme. As soon as I walked in to CORT Clearance Center , I found two sofas that would work perfectly in our living room in front of the fireplace. I love the color of this sofa and the direction of the chaise would work perfectly directly in front of the fireplace too.
This grey sofa also caught my eye in the store and I think would be another good choice along with a rustic chair. Decisions, decisions. I should ask my husband choice in the matter but if it was up to him, we’d still have our old, dated beast of the sofa sitting in my new living room. That ain’t gonna happen.
So which sofa would you chose in my living room next to my fireplace makeover?
I love the way my Simple and Temporary Fireplace Makeover turned out! It’s the small details that really do make a room and I am looking forward to bringing a new, comfy couch in to out home soon.
