DIY Picture Frame with Vinyl

January 1, 2013 by Holly Gagnon 35 Comments

Happy New Year and thanks for joining in on the Ringing in the New Year Blog Hop!
The idea behind this Hop is to bring 9 talented ladies together so they can show off inspiring projects they’ve made by using a “NEW” craft item.

Have ya heard of that “other” die cutting machine that starts with a S and does like a million things?  Yep- I jumped on the Silhouette Cameo bandwagon and I can honestly now say that my hubby DOES listen to me sometimes ’cause he purchased this amazing “NEW” gem for me.  (It was in my Amazon wishlist..heehee)

I still heart my Cricut machines, we’ve spent many hours and years together.  I feel like I’m having a die cutting machine affair though.  My Expressions seems to know it too ’cause it’s beginning to act a little finicky lately.

So today, I get to share with you my FIRST ever Cameo project…Tah Dah!

What kind of Christmas present do you send to your parents that don’t want anything?  A picture of there adorable grandkids made by there crafty daughter, that’s what.

I purchased a unfinished wood frame , stained it, distressed it with a sander and then adhered some whimsical vinyl cuts to it.  Just in case your wondering, only two of those kiddos are mine.  The other two cuties are my sister boys.

I’ll admit though, this vinyl project took me a little a longer to complete than it would if I used my old friend Cricut.  Mr. Cameo and I are still in that “awkward” relationship building stage.

Picture Frame with Vinyl made with Silhouette
I found my stick tree images from the Silhouette online store while I was searching out my original idea of using stick people images.  OMG’s there are sooo many stick figures to choose from!  Maybe I’ll cut out the whole fam now in vinyl and stick it on the back of my van…lol.
Star Vinyl Cut Out

I purchased the LD Carefree font and the smiling sun from the Silhouette store too.  The sun was a little tricky to transfer on the frame since the sunbeams are so small but boy, did Cameo cut it out like butter!

Stick Figure Tree

So there it is, my first Cameo creation a Picture Frame with Vinyl –Yay!!   I’m really excited to develop a deeper relationship with Mr. Cameo too.   Ahhh..pitter patter…

I want to give a BIG thanks out to Jill for organizing this New Year’s Blog Hop and for making me go first….yikes!
Now head over to  Shelly at My Paper Love to see what “NEW” crafty item she used.

Hi Holly. Happy New Year! I just got a Cameo too, and have had to put it on the other end of my computer bench to my Cricut machines (E and Imagine), just so they don’t get jealous 😉

You’re going to love your Cameo…I got one a year ago for Christmas and I love what it can do. It still plays well with my Cricut, but it’s so nice to have the new machine! Love your frame, it’s super cute!

Love the frame……and Happy New Year 2013! I am still sitting on the fence as far as switching to the Cameo. I know I would do it in a minute if I didn’t have sooooooo much moolah invested in my Cricut! Thanks for the chance to win and I am a new FB fan!

You are in the “awkward stage” with your Cameo! That made me fall on the floor laughing. I thought about adding the fam to my van too:-) Your project turned out super cute and I am thrilled to be kicking off this year sharing some creativity with some amazing ladies!

Nice frame, and good looking photo. Everyone that has a Silhouette seems to agree that they “cut like butter.” That would be an improvement over Cricut, but I’m definitely still in a relationship with my Expression. TFS!

I LOVE your frame- it looks like you could have bought it that way! As for the vinyl, I used to really have trouble with it until I successfully used transfer paper. I don’t know how that would work on the wood but it is worth a try. Makes life a whole lot better 😉

Love being in the hop with you. You’ve got a new follower.
