Lucky Shamrock Coin Bags

February 27, 2019 by Holly Gagnon 6 Comments

St. Patrick’s Day will be here soon and I’m all about little green treat ideas.   This year, to bring a little bit of luck to my kids and their pals,  I decided to use my sewing machine and my Silhouette to make Lucky Shamrock Coin Bags.

There’s something about Glitter Heat Transfer Material that I find addicting.  I love to add a little bit of sparkle in my projects and Glitter Heat Transfer provides just that.

Supplies need to make Lucky Shamrock Coin Bags . Silhouette, Drop Cloths and heat transfer vinyl.

Supplies Used to make Lucky Shamrock Coin Bags:

  • Silhouette Cameo
  • Glitter Green Heat Transfer Material
  • Three Leaf Clover Design
  • Canvas Bags

I actually made my Coin Bags out of Drop Cloths.  Drop cloth is another one of my favorites too.  It’s just a big sheet of canvas but you can get a pack of drop cloths at the hardware store for less then $10.

Drop Cloth bag Cut

I’m by no means a professional sewer.  By no means.  When I thought of making these bags,  I was like,  how am I going to add a drawstring and how will I keep the ends from fraying?  When I opened up the  package, I noticed the edge of the drop cloths already have a nice sewn edge so I was like heck, I’m gonna use that seam and that’s exactly what I did.

How to sew coin bags out of drop cloths

I cut the drop cloths  at 8 x  6 inches, then folded them in half to sew the openings together.

Then, turned them outside in and done!  Little DIY Coin Bags.

Shamrock Silhouette Shape

Next, I opened up my  Silhouette Software and select a Shamrock shape and sized them to what I wanted.

Green Glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl
I cut the shamrocks out with Green Glitter Heat Transfer  and weeded off the negative cuts leaving only the shamrock shape on the plastic backing.

Iron on Green Glitter HTV on to canvas bags

Then,  I used my iron to adhere the glitter Shamrocks on to the coin bags.

Now, the fun part.  Fill the bags up with chocolate gold coins or other gold  treats and tie jute twine around the top.   These Lucky Shamrock Coin Bags are a simple DIY project perfect to bring a little luck to any one who receives them.

These are darling! Would you believe that I have had a Silhouette for over a year that I have never used because it totally overwhelms me?!? This might be my inspiration to start!

Hi Holly, I love these little bags and would love to make them for our next ladies group gathering. The thing is I don’t know what a Silhouette machine is. Does the machine cut out the little shamrocks for do you have to cut them out. I am in Australia and I have never heard of this machine.

Thank you Helen! A Silhouette is a die cutting machine but you could easily make the same idea by using heat transfer vinyl and a shamrock punch. Basically , you would buy heat transfer vinyl, punch out the shamrock then iron them on to the bags. Good Luck!
