The Paper Variety Tutorial- Paper Tearing & Chalking.......

Today I'm sharing a tutorial for The Paper Variety on a few basic techniques that I use for paper tearing and chalking.

What I like about chalk is it easily adds a subtle enhancement. You can add more or less by simply blending the color with a cotton ball or applicator unlike using ink pads. .

I actually learned this paper tear technique from a scrapbooking demonstration that I attended on a Royal Caribbean Cruise years ago. The chalking was something else I've added.

What a great vacation, huh? Sun, food and scrapping!

To make this card you will need:

*Chalks
*Cotton Balls and eyeshadow applicators (I just use cheap dollar store applicators).
* White Card Base
* 3- 1 inch white-core cardstock strips in blue tones for ocean colors.
*Die-cut with a body or face that can be enhanced with chalk. I used the Mermaid cut from
Life's a Beach cartridge.
* Stamped sentiment from K. Andrew Designs.

When you tear paper you either want to tear towards you or away from you. In this example, I'm tearing towards me because I want to see the white core. If you tear away from you, you'll still see the rough edge but not the white core.

Using a cotton ball, choose a color you want to chalk with and cover the white torn edges as desired .

Using your cotton ball again, chalk the white background of the card in a circular motion to make the look of clouds or sky.
Stack and attach the waves to your card. Remember you're making waves, they're suppose to look uneven.

Now I want to add a little bit of color to my Mermaid

Using an applicator, I added some pink to her cheeks, a little bit of tan to her skin and some yellow highlights in her hair. For detailed chalking, I like to use an applicator and blend with a cotton ball if needed.

So here she is.......enhanced with a sun-kissed tan and flowing blonde hair. I mean she is a Mermaid!

Here are a few more examples of paper tearing & chalking:
Add layered torn pattern paper to cards
and use chalk as desired
Use torn paper and chalk to make unique borders and
embellishments on layouts.

The Paper Variety Photo Challenge.....You Go Girl!

For the new challenge this week at The Paper Variety we want to see your creations inspired by this movie poster.

I love the colors in this movie poster, my first design project at TPV, Wish Upon A Star used this same color palette.

I've yet to see this movie but I did a google search and read it was set in Ireland.

That sparked my first idea of a St. Patrick's Day project then a few other ideas came along but I just kept coming back to that fabulous green dress which needed a cute pair of shoes to match.

So here's my card inspired by my favorite type of shoe and that fabulous green dress. Oh, how I so want a pair of these wedges!

I thought the sentiment inside the card was fitting since the movie is about her asking a man to marry her so...... "You Go Girl"!

Card base and layer-Art Philosophy Cartridge.
Shoe- Paisley Cartridge cut at 2.41 inches.
Paper - K & Co, Handmade Pack
Stamped sentiments from K. Andrew Designs- Fashionable Friends set.

Thanks for looking and we look forward to you linking up with us at TPV for a chance to win this awesome prize from  Apron Strings Designs.

It's Time for Valentines.......

This is what we did this weekend.....made homemade Valentines for my kids classrooms. Fun!

My daughter is 5 and she was totally into making Valentines where as my son who is 7 1/2 really didn't have much interest.  I'm sure he would of preferred the store bought Lego Star Wars Valentine kits if I gave him the choice.  Here's what we came up with for our......

It's a bird, it's a plane......

How cute are these guys?  Don't worry, I'll tell you how I made them at the end of my post.  My son wrote his name on the cape and we stamped "you're awesome" from K.Andrew Designs -Food for Thought stamps.

For my daughters Valentines, we chose to use the Paisley Cartridge to make these simply sweet treats.
The cards are cut at 2.63 inches high.

She wrote her name on the heart cut out and stamped a sentiment from K. Andrew Designs It's Valentines stamps.

I know you're probably like me and said, "How did she make those Super Hero's?"

Well, the idea was from Pinterest (where else?) as Super Hero Birthday Favors so I modified mine for Valentines.

The Pin actually had a template to use but there was NO WAY I was going to cut 30 cape's and masks by hand so I used  my Cricut & Gypsy to create my own.

Here's the link to the original template or

here's my tutorial......

The Cape and Mask are both from Paper Doll Dress Up (Super Hero).

I trimmed the collar off the cape because it was looking more like a vampire cape to me than Super Hero. Punch a whole for the stick ( no tape/glue needed)

The mask on PDDU is only a face mask and I wanted a wrap around mask so I stretched and welded 2 rectangles to each side of the mask.   I then used a glue dot to adhere the mask.

The red heart is a punch and the V is from Batman font cut at 1 inch.

Thanks for looking and Happy Valentine's Day!

Simply Sunday Challenge with Getting Cricky.....Wedding Wishes

For the Simply Sunday Challenge this week at Getting Cricky with K. Andrews  we want to see your wedding theme creations.

Since Spring Weddings are already being planned, I decided to make simple but elegant wedding favors out of sour cream containers. It's to bad there isn't a better name for these little treat containers, the word "sour" just doesn't sound that elegant but that's what they look like.

When I got married, 13 years ago, I had the big church, big dress wedding.  If I had to do it again (not that I'm planning on getting married again...LOL),  I'd totally do a shabby chic, barefoot, beach wedding and make these favors!

Here's how to make these containers:

Strong adhesive
 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 card stock (I embossed mine with dots)
Tape 3 sides only
Roll and adhere into cylinder.
Pinch and adhere at each end, opposite directions.

For the tag, I cut a 2 inch scalloped circle (Alphalicious cartridge) out of Core Paper  which I then sanded and texture embossed.  Have you ever used this color Core paper?  It's awesome.....looks totally like denim when distressed, right?

I then gave it at Shabby Chic look by adding burlap, raffia ribbon and these cute little Shabby Chic roses that I  found in the dollar bin at Michael's.

To tell the guest thank you,  I stamped  K. Andrew Designs  Fashionable Friends and Winter Wishes sentiments together.   When you invest in a few of Kristal's stamps sets it's really easy to find ways to combine the sentiments together.

Thanks for looking and linking up with Getting Cricky.

CWC Love Song Blog Hop.....Love is in the Air

Welcome to Cooking with Cricut Love Song Blog Hop!  We've got lots of LOVE floating around and our designers have come up with some great Valentine's Day projects inspired by their favorite love songs.

If you've arrived from Michelle's Craft Creations you're in the right place.  If you've just joined in then you can start at the beginning HERE

The only song that kept playing in my head as a love song was  the original "Love is in the Air"  song by John Paul Young back in 1978.  I know, how generic is that?   The other cheesy song that ran  through my head was "The Love Boat"....Yep, I'm a 70's child and I still dig the music.

I do have LOVE in the air though, look what I made, a Hot Air Balloon....Eeeeek!  I'm also offering up some blog candy so keep on reading..

Maybe you've seen a previous posting of mine about a "happy little accident" that I made called  The Best Kisses are Chocolate?

Well, this is the top part of the cupcake!  Yep, since I cut them both in the wrong size, I turned the bottom part into a candy bowl and the top part into a Hot Air Balloon.

Here's how I made the balloon:

Sweet Tooth Boxes- Top part of the cupcake cut out as large as it would size on my Gypsy. The exact measurement is a mystery, that's why I messed up the whole project!

Ribbons and Rosettes- Scalloped border
Sweet Treats- Basket
Hoot-n-Holler Lite- Owl
Alphalicious- Scalloped Circle and Layer
Sweethearts- Love sentiment
Doodlecharms- Heart and layer

I hand cut 5-wedges (approx 5" long to 4-3" wide) to make the bottom part of the balloon.  My original idea was to cut apart the bottom of the cupcake at the separations instead of glueing them together but since my measurements were already off, I just hand cut the wedges on this balloon.

How cute is this stamped sentiment?  Its' from  K. Andrew Designs- It's Valentines stamp set.

Since this post is long and you stuck with me here's a chance to win some blog candy for your time.  I'll post a random winner on Valentine's Day!

Also, We hope you’ll join us at CWC to link up your favorite love song inspired project.
One lucky entry will be chosen by random.org to win a $10.00 gift certificate provided by PaperCraftingWorld.com and one lucky commenter will also receive a $10.00 PaperCraftingWorld.com gift certificate!

Now hop on over to  Elizabeth at Broken Treasures to see what she's cooked up!

A Heart With Love...

I found this heart shaped box at Target in the dollar bin and I could just hear it calling my name. "Please, alter me with some Ribbons and Glue"....pardon the pun....LOL.

Don't you just love this paper lace?   Suzanne, a fellow design team member of mine at The Paper Variety , posted a tutorial on how to make this faux paper lace.

Check Suzy's tutorial out HERE!

To alter this box, I cut a 4" heart from Gypsy Wanderings and adhered paper lace behind the heart and on the rim of the box.

I then added a cute gingham button tied with twine and a stamped sentiment banner "With Love"  from K. Andrew Designs  It's Valentines stamps.

Thanks for looking!

This week for Challenge # 72 at Cooking with Cricut we want to see you create a Grown Up Valentine's project using black and brads.  My little "Red Hot" hearts are cut from the Sweethearts cartridge.

I made this card even more "RED HOT" by adding a zebra print brad, rhinestones, red glitter, swirl embossing and tying it all together with a black grosgrain ribbon.

Ooh La La........Check out the inside of my card!

The stamped sentiments are from -K. Andrew DesignsIt's Valentines and Food for Thought sets and yes, the lips are a stamp too...SWAK!

Heart Garland.........

I saw this cute heart garland on Pinterest and of course I just had to make one myself.

So simple to make and I didn't even use my Cricut....Bleekk!

Here's how I made mine:
7 -1 " strips stacked in this order:
 8"-6"-4"-6"-4"-6"-8"

TIP: Arrange 3 pattern strips facing one way & then face the other 3 strips the opposite way.

Attach all the strips together at one end.
Bend the other unattached ends into a heart shape and adhere to the middle 6" length.

I strung the hearts on a raffia ribbon and added a pearl heart in the middle of each one.

I'm kind of digging the  non-traditional Valentines colors, may just have to keep it hanging up all year round.

The Paper Variety Sketch Challenge......The Joy of Christmas

 Look- it's a Christmas layout already scrapped-Yeah!
Well, it's actually from 2010...I'm really, really behind with all my scrapbooking. I used to be a scrapbooker, I'm still one at heart though. I just haven't scrapbooked much since I've become obsessed with card making and Cricut projects over the last two years.

Since being on TPV design team, I've been so impressed by the talent these ladies have and there amazing layouts that they've inspired to do a little scrapbooking again.

This week at The Paper Variety were doing a Sketch Challenge. Now I have to admit, this is also my FIRST sketch challenge ever! Yep-  for some reason, I've always stayed away from following a sketch, just like to my do my own thing, I guess. It's not like you have to follow the sketch exactly though, just your interpretation.

So, here are my kiddos the night before Christmas after their bath, wearing there Christmas pajamas and waiting for Santa to come.   Such Joy!

The paper is a Christmas Stack from DCWV. The ornament is cut from Christmas Cheer and the sentiment font is from Birthday Cakes.  Yes, I own 3 Cricut Cake cartridges but do not own a Cricut Cake machine...go figure, I'm just a cartridge hoarder.

If you play along with  TPV sketch challenge this week you could have the chance to win this awesome kit from:
Who doesn't love to win pretty paper, die-cuts, stickers and alphas?

Thanks for looking at linking at TPV.
